Zermatt is located at the foot of the Matterhorn in the Swiss Alps in the south of Switzerland, at a height of 1624m.

Around Zermatt there are 29 of the 76 European Viertausender. The ski resort of Zermatt is on the Theodul (3300m) and Testa Grigia (3480m) with the ski resort of Cervinia (Italy).


Travelling by car


Zermatt is car free. Access for private transport is only up Täsch (5km from Zermatt). The road Täsch - Zermatt is open to public transport.

In Täsch parking garages are available (2900 seats, which in 2000 Matterhorn Terminal Täsch) and public parking lots (900 seats). Some parking garages also have outdoor courts and offer a taxi service to and from Zermatt.

Between Täsch and Zermatt run at 20 minutes the shuttle trains of the Matterhorn Gotthard railway. Special night roadmap from 9.12.2007.


Arriving by train


The railway has in Brig and Visp direct connection to the modern gauge the Matterhorn Gotthard Railway, which takes you a ride of one and a hlaf hour ride through the rugged and romantic Vispertal Zermatt.

From December 2007

The new Lötschberg tunnel from Frutigen (BE) after Raron (VS) shortens the duration of travel by train to Zermatt sharply from the end of 2007.
